Apple unleashes iTunes U, iBooks Author and iBooks2 – Textbook industry will change overnight

If you were lucky enough to attend the event of just followed through the Engadget live blog feed, like I did. You would already know that Apple Inc plans on doing to textbooks, what they did to the music industry. They announced three great new products that will make college bookstores as well as students rethink textbooks.

iBooks2 will reinvent how textbooks are distributed. Gone will be the long lines at the store as well as students complaining about high prices. Apple plans on making textbooks easily available through their new store. Students/Faculty can choose the entire book or just chapters. Once purchased, the books are yours to keep and can be accessed digitally by any Apple device. Even textbook buyback will be effected because there won’t be an actual book to sell back. Apple plans on working with publishers directly to get the content out to individuals.

iBooks Author will make it free and simple to create interactive books. This app, which is currently available in the app store will make creating a book incredibly easy. This would allow faculty to pretty much put together their own interactive book that would be specific to the course load. Faculty would create the book and the price of the book would then be determined depending on which sources the information was taken from. These books would be completely interactive using video, and photos along with texts.

iTunes U will make it simple for anyone to take a course anywhere. Signing up for a course will be as simple as clicking enroll. Currently Duke and Yale, HACC, MIT and The Open University are just some of the colleges using this program. More colleges plan on jumping into the program.

March 18 – 21, 2012 – Hilton & City Center, Saratoga Springs, NY

Join us at The Hilton & City Center from March 18 to March 21 for our 2012 Joint Meeting and Trade Show in lovely Saratoga Springs, NY. 4 days of networking with other people in the college store industry, educational sessions that will give you the advantage needed to stay ahead of the curve and an amazing trade show full of wonderful new products, new ideas and new companies. A schedule of classes and events will be posted here soon.

While you are in Saratoga Springs for the 2012 Joint Meeting & Trade Show, you might as well take advantage of everything Saratoga Springs has to offer. In your spare time you could take a stroll up North Broadway and head towards the beautiful Skidmore College campus and tour The Zankel Music Center or visit The Skidmore Shop (The Skidmore College campus store). If you are up for a 20 minute car ride, you could head over to the Saratoga Battlefields and State Park and stand in the same spot where American forces met, defeated and forced a major British army to surrender to forever change the face of the world. Another thing you could do is make your way over to the West side of Saratoga Springs AKA Art District located on Beekman Street (just minutes on foot from The Hilton) and check the amazing art scene, bistros and gastropubs that populate that area. Or just head out the front door of the hotel and take the 5 minute walk towards Caroline Street, a very popular late night destination for the the Skidmore College students as well as Saratoga locals. While you are downtown you should definitely make sure you get a doughboy at Esperantos. We promise you’ll get addicted to them in just one bite, and that’s not a bad thing. Sadly the Saratoga flat track only runs in the summer, but you could head over to The Saratoga Racino for some great video gaming, harness racing or dancing at Club Vapor.
